STRATFORD – Wausau Newman Catholic scored five times in the third inning and held on to defeat Stratford 6-5 in a Marawood Conference South Division softball game Friday at Hilgemann Field.

Ashley Jankowski struck out five and did not walk a batter to earn the complete-game victory for Newman Catholic (1-3, 1-1 Marawood South), which picks up its first win of the season and splits the conference series with Stratford (5-2, 1-1 Marawood South).

The game was tied at 1-1 before the Cardinals put together a big inning, scoring five times against Stratford pitcher Tria Tubbs.

Ava Sukanen drove in a pair of runs with a single, and after two walks, Theil singled with the bases loaded plating Sukanen and two more on following an error in the outfield.

Stratford was able to climb back to within a run as Emma Roeper had a solo home run in the third, two runs scored on an error in the fifth and another error in the sixth led to a run, but Jankowski retired the final four batters in order to finish off the victory for the Cardinals.

Both teams will be back in action Monday with home Marawood South games – Newman Catholic against Auburndale and Stratford vs. Marathon. Both games start at 4:45 p.m.
