Wausau Pilot & Review

This season, the Marathon County Public Library is sharing Sensational Summer Reads with Wausau Pilot & Review readers. Each week during the summer, Wausau Pilot will feature one recommended book for adults and one for children, handpicked by MCPL staff. Here are this week’s picks:

“Ahoy!,” By Sophie Blackall

Join a young captain and their grown-up as they set aside the household chores for a little while to spend some quality time together. Although the rug needs vacuuming and there are probably other chores waiting, it’s hard to say no when the rug suddenly becomes an ocean with sharks quickly approaching!

They hop aboard the imaginary ship and their adventure begins. The aforementioned rug turned into an ocean may still need to be vacuumed by the end of the story, but there’s always tomorrow.

Caldecott medalist Sophie Blackall’s beautiful illustrations paired with an intrepid, imaginative tale make this book a must-read for summer!

“Other Minds: The octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness,” by Peter Godfrey-Smith

There is no other creature on earth quite like the octopus. A creature who’s brain is spread out across all eight of their legs and can open jars, identify their human keepers and escape from their tanks, wander across the room, climb into another tank and have a midnight snack. The octopus has an intelligence and might be the closest we will ever come to talking to an alien. What will we learn from this encounter?

Visit the Marathon County Public Library for more great reads, and watch for next week’s recommendation!
