The Newman Cardinals fell to the Prentice Buccaneers Friday by a score of 76-68, in Marawood Conference action.

Despite the loss, Newman Coach Dan Garrett said he is happy with his team’s effort.

“We played really well tonight,” Garrett said. “Prentice was able to hit free throws down the stretch to seal the game but this was our best effort so far this year.”

Newman’s Ben Leischer was the top scorer for the Cardinals, bringing in 18 points in Friday’s game. Two other players scored in double digits: Cade Kimball with 11 points and Kasey Kalafice with 10.

Garrett said Newman is a young team, with just one senior on the roster.

“We made some mistakes and bad decisions down the stretch but playing in games like this should only make us a better team as the season goes on,” Garrett said. “Give Prentice credit for being able to hit free throws down the stretch.”

Next up for Newman is an away game vs. Marathon on Friday, Dec. 8. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
