A 26-year-old Wausau man arrested Saturday by a Wisconsin State Patrol trooper on suspicion of fifth-offense drunken driving was also wanted by the Department of Corrections, according to state officials.

Hunter C. Johnson was pulled over Saturday, April 6 on Huggins Road near Hwy. 45 in Langlade County for multiple alleged vehicle equipment violations. A trooper, noting Johnson’s 0.02 percent alcohol level driver restriction due to past convictions, arrested him after allegedly noting the smell of intoxicants in the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado Johnson was driving.

Police say Johnson, who is being held on an order to detain issued by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, was driving with a revoked license at the time of his arrest.

Court records show Johnson was released in October from Stanley Correctional, where he had just completed an 18-month sentence for sexual assault. His sentence was being served at the same time he was serving a one-year term for his fourth drunken driving conviction in a case that concluded in September 2022.

Preliminary breath test results from Johnson’s arrest on Saturday have not been provided. He is due to appear in court Monday to face formal charges.

You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
